About Maple Valley Golf & Country Club

Maple Valley Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole public course southeast of Rochester, Minnesota. Wayne Idso began building the course on his family's farm in May 1963 after researching golf-course architecture and consulting the National Golf Foundation. Maple Valley opened for play in 1964 with 18 holes and an original length of 6,915 yards.

The routing subsequently changed substantially: portions of the back nine were moved off steep hillside ground in the late 1960s, holes 4 through 6 were relocated across the Root River in the early 1970s, and after severe flooding in 1978 the back nine was moved to the same side of the river. Current published scorecard data lists the Blue tees at 5,916 yards, par 71, with a course rating of 70.0 and slope of 117. White tees measure 5,711 yards and Red tees 5,140 yards.

The course is an 18-hole golf course. It plays to par 71, 5,916 yards, course rating 70 and slope rating 117. Designed by Wayne Idso, the course originally opened in 1964. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Cart Rental.

Origins

Wayne Idso began acquiring the family farm around 1960. After reading about converting farm acreage to recreation, he studied golf-course architecture and contacted the National Golf Foundation. A representative inspected the property and supported the concept.

With his wife Suzanne and their six children, Idso began construction in May 1963.

Development

The course opened in 1964 with 18 holes measuring 6,915 yards. During the late 1960s several back-nine holes were moved down from steep hillside ground. In the early 1970s holes 4, 5 and 6 were moved across the Root River.

Major flooding in 1978 led Idso to relocate all back-nine holes to the same side of the river.

Today

Eric and Karen Idso purchased Maple Valley in 2005, continuing family ownership. Later generations of the Idso family remain involved in course operations.
