About Oakland University Golf and Learning Center

Oakland University Golf and Learning Center in Rochester, Michigan, is a two-course university golf facility rather than a single golf layout. Katke-Cousins Golf Course opened in 1977 and is a par-72 course designed by Bill Newcomb, with Bob Beard also credited by Oakland University as architect. Its Black tees measure 7,170 yards.

The separate R&S Sharf Golf Course opened in 2000 and was designed by Rick Smith, with Warren Henderson credited as architect; its Black tees measure 7,103 yards. Because these are independent 18-hole courses, a single facility-level par, rating or slope would be misleading. The center also maintains extensive practice facilities, including a large bent-grass driving range, hitting mats, teaching tees, a short-game area with three greens and five bunkers, and a putting green.

The course is a 36-hole parkland golf course. The course was designed by Rick Smith and Bill Newcomb and Bob Beard and Warren Henderson. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Teaching Tees, Putting Green, Short Game Area, Practice Bunkers, Golf Shop, Clubhouse.

Origins

Oakland University's first present-day 18-hole course, Katke-Cousins, opened in 1977. The university identifies Bill Newcomb as designer and Bob Beard as architect.

Did You Know?
The facility's two Black-tee courses both exceed 7,100 yards.

Design Philosophy

For R&S Sharf, designer Rick Smith cited the university's commitment to its golf facility and the natural potential of the site as reasons for taking on the project. The university describes the course as drawing on older golf-architecture traditions while working through a wooded site with elevated tees and undulating greens.

Development

Growing demand led Oakland University to add a second 18-hole course. R&S Sharf opened in 2000, creating a 36-hole golf complex rather than replacing Katke-Cousins.

Recognition

Oakland University reports that Golf Digest ranked R&S Sharf 21st among Michigan's 855 golf courses.

Today

The Golf and Learning Center operates both Katke-Cousins and R&S Sharf, the Steve Sharf Clubhouse and extensive driving-range and short-game practice facilities.
