Origins

The site's golf history grew out of a very different civic purpose. In 1917, Howland resident Judith Henn had 132 acres available and the City of Warren acquired the land while considering facilities for residents affected by a possible influenza epidemic. When the anticipated need did not materialize, the city was left with vacant property.

With the land intended for recreational use, a municipal nine-hole golf facility was developed. The club's official history dates public opening to 1928.

Did You Know?
The property was acquired during concern about a possible influenza epidemic before being converted to recreational use.

Development

A second nine was added after the original municipal nine, creating the present 18-hole course. The property remained city-owned through later changes in private operating arrangements. After periods of declining conditions and operational disruption, M2 Golf Management, headed by PGA professional Scott Karabin, took over management in 2019 and began a program of course and operational improvements.

Today

Old Avalon remains owned by the City of Warren and operates as an 18-hole public municipal course. The current official scorecard plays to par 71, with a maximum published length of 6,415 yards on the club's Black/White markers. Public daily-fee golf, practice facilities and instruction are offered.
