About Oued Fès Golf

Oued Fès Golf is an 18-hole, par-72 course within Fès, designed by Scottish golf architect Jonathan Gaunt. Morocco's national tourism authority publishes a length of 6,243 metres, although the current Madaef operator page contains conflicting measurements of both 6,344 and 6,243 metres. Gaunt designed the course around three principal landscape types: woodland, wetland and grassland, including some drier areas.

Fairways run through wooded ground and alongside the oued, while lagoons and other water features are integrated with the drainage system. The design required fairways, tees, greens and practice areas to be raised above the site's calculated flood level, with bridges and boardwalks crossing lower wetland areas. Facilities include a golf academy, driving range, approach greens, putting green, pro shop, cart and trolley rental and golf-bag rental.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,243m. The course was designed by Jonathan Gaunt. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf academy, Driving range, Approach greens, Putting green, Pro shop, Golf cart hire, Trolley hire, Golf bag hire, and 1 more.

Origins

Oued Fès was conceived as part of a substantial golf and residential development in Fès. Jonathan Gaunt's commission involved a site crossed by the oued and vulnerable to periodic flooding, making drainage and elevation fundamental parts of the design rather than later additions.

Did You Know?
The principal playing surfaces were raised approximately 1.5 metres above the calculated 100-year flood level.

Design Philosophy

Gaunt Golf Design describes three principal landscape characters: woodland, wetland and grassland, with some drier, desert-like features. Fairways, greens, tees, the 300-metre driving range and practice greens were raised roughly 1.5 metres above the 100-year flood level. Excavated material from new water features and imported subsoil were used to create those elevations.

Lower areas were retained as wetlands and crossed using paths, bridges and boardwalks.

Development

Current operator Madaef records an opening date of 2012, while Gaunt Golf Design says the course opened for play in May 2013. The discrepancy may reflect completion versus public opening, but the available sources do not explicitly explain it.

Today

Madaef operates Oued Fès as an 18-hole par-72 course with an academy, driving range, short-game practice areas and putting green. The Royal Moroccan Golf Federation also lists Jonathan Gaunt as designer.
