Oxford Golf Club occupies one of England's longest-established golfing sites, with golf documented on Cowley Marsh from 1873. The modern course is an 18-hole, par-70 parkland layout of approximately 6,303 yards. James Braid contributed to an earlier layout, but Harry Colt substantially redesigned the course in 1922, retaining several Braid holes; historical accounts indicate that about 95 percent of Colt's routing remains in use.
The sandy ground beneath the course gives it notably good drainage compared with much of the surrounding Oxford clay. Three historic clubs have been associated with the property: Oxford University Golf Club, founded in 1875; Oxford City Golf Club, founded in 1899; and Oxford Ladies Golf Club, founded in 1901. The venue was formerly known as Southfield Golf Club before adopting the Oxford Golf Club name in 2014.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 70, 5,764m (6,303 yards), course rating 70.8 and slope rating 130. Designed by James Braid, the course originally opened in 1873. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Restaurant, Bar, Locker Room.
Informal golf was played on Cowley Marsh from 1873. Oxford University Golf Club followed in 1875, Oxford City Golf Club in 1899 and Oxford Ladies Golf Club in 1901.
James Braid shaped an earlier course before Harry Colt substantially reworked it in 1922. Colt incorporated several Braid holes into his routing rather than replacing every part of the earlier design.
The course became known as Southfield and remained home to Oxford's historic golfing organisations. Southfield Golf Club was renamed Oxford Golf Club in 2014. In 2023 the club marked the centenary of Colt's design with the Colt Invitational.
The Colt routing is historically significant because the great majority of his 1922 layout remains in play a century later.
Oxford Golf Club remains an 18-hole parkland course close to the city centre, with practice ground, putting green, clubhouse and visitor access.
