Origins

The concept emerged in 1929 as S.F.B. Morse considered using golf to enhance his ocean-side property. In 1931 he agreed to transfer the land for the front nine to the City of Pacific Grove for a symbolic $10 gold coin, with the requirement that it remain maintained and irrigated as a golf course for at least five years.

Did You Know?
The city acquired the land for the original nine from S.F.B. Morse for a $10 gold coin, subject to keeping it as a golf course.

Design Philosophy

H. Chandler Egan created the original out-and-back figure-eight nine. Jack Neville later approached the Point Pinos dunes in a more traditional links manner, allowing the natural windswept terrain to dictate much of the routing.

Development

The Egan nine opened on 9 May 1932. Neville's second nine opened in 1960. S.

Coast Guard deeded the Point Pinos Lighthouse and back-nine property to the city, which committed to restoring native and endangered dune vegetation.

Today

Pacific Grove remains a public municipal course, combining the older inland nine with Neville's seaside links nine.
