Origins

During the restoration and redevelopment of French Lick Resort, ownership determined that a second championship course was needed to complement the historic Donald Ross layout. Pete Dye was asked to examine a severe hilltop site around Mount Airie. Although initially doubtful that the terrain could accommodate golf, he ultimately accepted the project.

Did You Know?
Pete Dye reportedly made about 150 site visits during the three-year project.

Design Philosophy

Dye reshaped the rugged hilltop extensively while trying to make the course physically navigable. The finished layout uses narrow fairways, pronounced terrain and long views over southern Indiana, with multiple tee positions allowing the course to vary from ordinary resort play to an 8,102-yard championship setup.

Development

Construction took roughly three years and involved extensive earthmoving. The 1928 mansion built by Thomas Taggart for his son was incorporated into the golf operation as the clubhouse.

Recognition

The course received major recognition immediately after opening, including Golf Digest's America's Best New Public Course award. It subsequently became a venue for national professional championships and was named National Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association in 2017.

Today

The Pete Dye Course remains one of the principal courses at French Lick Resort and operates alongside the resort's Donald Ross and Valley Links layouts.
