About Portlethen Golf Club

Portlethen Golf Club is an 18-hole course south of Aberdeen, created after the club was founded in 1981. Local landowner Willie Donald donated 138 acres for the project; title passed to Kincardine & Deeside District Council, which leased the property to the club and helped finance construction. Donald Steel designed the course, which opened for play in 1989.

The championship layout reaches 6,663 yards and plays to par 72. The Findon Burn is an important recurring feature, crossing five holes on the outward nine and returning to influence the 15th and 18th. The club itself identifies the 15th as arguably its signature hole, with a dogleg tee shot followed by an approach across the burn.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,092m (6,663 yards). Designed by Donald Steel, the course originally opened in 1989. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Short Game Area, Pro Shop, Club Hire, Trolley Hire, Golf Cart Rental, Restaurant, and 1 more.

Origins

Portlethen Golf Club was founded in 1981 as Portlethen was expanding from a small village. Willie Donald, managing director of Donalds of Portlethen and a local landowner, gifted 138 acres for a golf course. The land was transferred to Kincardine & Deeside District Council, which leased it back to the club and provided finance for construction.

Design Philosophy

Donald Steel incorporated the site's natural burn into the strategic structure of the course. The Findon Burn repeatedly asks players to choose between position and aggression, most notably at the fourth and 15th holes.

Development

The course opened for play in 1989. Clubhouse facilities were subsequently expanded to accommodate dining, functions, conferences and social use.

Today

Portlethen operates as a members' club that welcomes visitors and maintains an 18-hole course, extensive practice facilities and clubhouse services.
