Origins

The Calcutta Golf Club was established in March 1829, during the period when Calcutta was a major administrative and commercial centre of British India. Its first course consisted of nine holes at Dum Dum. The club subsequently established two nine-hole courses on the Maidan.

The Dum Dum facility closed in 1897, while changes to the Maidan, including development associated with the Victoria Memorial, affected those early layouts.

Development

The club's history spans several different golfing sites in Kolkata. One Maidan course was altered or lost during development of the Victoria Memorial precinct, while the remaining Maidan course survived until 1939. In 1912 the club received permission to add 'Royal' to its name.

Club minutes record that the title was granted by King George V in commemoration of his visit to Calcutta.

Recognition

Royal Calcutta is historically significant primarily for its age. The club identifies itself as the oldest golf club outside Britain and one of the earliest surviving golf institutions anywhere outside Scotland.

Today

The club now operates from 18 Golf Club Road in Tollygunge, Kolkata. Its principal course is an 18-hole par-72 layout and the club continues as a private sporting and social institution.
