About Royal Dornoch Golf Club - Struie Course

The Struie Course is Royal Dornoch Golf Club's second 18-hole links, running over ground beside the Dornoch Firth. The present course was developed from an earlier nine-hole layout and expanded to 18 holes in a project associated with Donald Steel and Robin Hiseman, opening in 1999. From the white tees it measures 6,265 yards and plays to par 71; published alternatives include yellow at 6,002 yards, blue at 5,230 and red at 5,442.

Compared with Royal Dornoch's Championship Course, Struie generally has narrower fairways and smaller greens, but wayward drives are often less severely punished. Its four par threes are oriented in different directions, making the prevailing west wind a changing factor through the round. Visitors are accepted, and the wider club provides a large practice ground, putting green, chipping/pitching and bunker area, three academy holes, professional shop and clubhouse services.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 71, 5,728m (6,265 yards). Designed by Donald Steel and Robin Hiseman, the course originally opened in 1999. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Practice Ground, Putting Green, Chipping Area, Bunker Practice Area, Academy Holes, Pro Shop, Clubhouse, and 3 more.

Origins

Struie developed from Royal Dornoch's secondary nine-hole course. Donald Steel and Robin Hiseman were involved in creating the modern 18-hole layout, which opened in 1999.

Its four par threes are laid out in four different directions, changing how the prevailing west wind affects each.

Design Philosophy

The course generally uses narrower fairways and smaller greens than the Championship Course. Accurate placement to the favourable side of fairways creates better approach angles, while the routing's short holes deliberately face different directions.

Development

Expansion from nine to 18 holes established Struie as a complete second course rather than simply an overflow loop for the Championship.

Today

Struie operates as a visitor-accessible 18-hole links alongside Royal Dornoch's Championship Course.
