Origins

The club was formed in 1888 after the Earl of Northesk called a meeting at Winchester Guildhall of local people interested in establishing a golf club. Richard Moss became the first president and Northesk the first captain. Land was rented at Morn Hill on the Winchester-Petersfield road, where the first links were laid out.

Members financed the early development through £5 debentures, while Northesk loaned £50 to help erect a hut on the course.

Development

The organisation began as The Winchester Golf Club, with its founders already expressing the hope that it might eventually earn the Royal designation. The club subsequently established the course associated with Royal Winchester today.

Today

Royal Winchester remains an 18-hole members' club that also accepts visitors at designated times. The course is rated for multiple men's and women's tee combinations.
