Saunton Golf Club's East Course is the original of the club's two links layouts on Braunton Burrows, England's largest sand dune system and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Founded in 1897 and redesigned by Herbert Fowler in 1919, it is regularly ranked among England's top 100 courses and hosted the 1937 English Amateur. Visitor play is welcomed by prior arrangement outside member tee times, with green fees varying by season.
The shared clubhouse has a restaurant and bar, and practice facilities include putting greens, a short-game area, a covered range, and a long practice ground.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. Designed by William Herbert Fowler, the course originally opened in 1897. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Full Membership, Social Membership, Junior Membership, Country Membership, Restaurant, Bar, Practice Ground, Covered Driving Range, and 2 more.
Golf had already been played on Braunton Burrows since the early 1890s when Saunton Golf Club was formally established in May 1897, laid out as a nine-hole course on the dune system separating the village from the Bristol Channel. Demand grew quickly: the layout was extended to twelve holes by 1906 and to a full eighteen by 1908, and a clubhouse was built in 1907 for £1,000.
The First World War interrupted play, and when the course reopened in 1919 it had been redesigned by Herbert Fowler, the architect behind Walton Heath, The Berkshire and Delamere Forest. Fowler's routing through the dunes quickly drew attention: by the early 1920s Saunton was regarded as one of Britain's premier links. H.
Taylor in 1923, and James Braid and Henry Cotton at a 1929 match marking a new clubhouse, added to its reputation, and the British Ladies' Championship was played there for the first time in 1932.
War intervened again in 1939, when the military requisitioned the site; the grounds were used for D-Day training exercises and tank storage, and the course suffered heavy damage over more than a decade of occupation. It did not reopen until January 1952, restored with help from German prisoners of war.
The East Course hosted the 1937 English Amateur, won by Frank Pennink, and in 2024 joined the West Course in staging the R&A's Women's and Men's Senior Amateur Championships. It is ranked among England's top 100 courses.
Saunton's East Course remains part of a members' club that welcomes visiting golfers by prior arrangement, still routed through the same Braunton Burrows dunescape that drew golfers to the site more than a century ago.
