Selborne Golf Estate at Pennington on KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast is an 18-hole, par-72 course associated with South Africa's first residential golf estate. The estate traces its golf development to dairy farmer Denis Barker, who decided in the mid-1980s to transform the property after travelling in the United States and Canada. Barker designed and built the course with assistance from his son Gary and local supporters.
The golf course opened for play in May 1987. Early facilities were notably modest: converted railway carriages served as changing rooms and the halfway house, while the property's Manor House became a small lodge. A purpose-built clubhouse followed.
The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. Designed by Denis Barker, the course originally opened in 1987. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Pro shop, Restaurant, Hotel, Spa, Bar, Terrace, Suite.
The property came into the hands of dairy farmer Denis Barker, who decided to create a golf course after a visit to the United States and Canada in the mid-1980s. Barker, his son Gary and local supporters developed the course as the centrepiece of a residential golf estate.
The course opened in May 1987. The estate initially operated through a share-block company. Its Manor House was converted into a seven-bedroom lodge, while converted railway carriages provided early golf facilities.
A new clubhouse was subsequently constructed. Selborne converted to sectional title in 2001 and additional hotel rooms were developed.
Selborne describes itself as South Africa's first housing golf estate, making it an early model for the country's later golf-estate development.
The property operates as Selborne Golf Estate, Hotel and Spa, combining its 18-hole course with accommodation, dining and spa facilities.
