Origins

The defining feature of Shamrock's creation was the woodland already occupying the site. The course's official history states that the property was an old, dense forest when construction took place in 1962. Instead of clearing the site wholesale, the builders retained selected mature oak, hickory and maple trees along the proposed playing corridors.

This allowed Shamrock to begin life with tree-lined fairways and natural obstacles that would ordinarily take decades to mature. The club says professional golf-course architects prepared the design and a specialist golf-course contractor carried out construction, but it does not identify those parties by name. Several later databases list an architect only as 'Fitzgerald'; without a reliably documented full identity, that attribution should not be treated as established.

Did You Know?
Rather than clearing the property completely, construction retained mature oak, hickory and maple trees so the new course opened with established tree-lined hazards.

Design Philosophy

Shamrock was developed as a short, near-regulation course rather than a conventional full-length par-72 layout. Its 18 holes total only 3,487 yards, with twelve par threes and six par fours. Length is therefore secondary to accuracy.

The retained forest creates narrow corridors, while the naturally rolling ground provides elevation changes. The official course description also explains that water from the adjacent Kankakee River was diverted through the property, serving both landscaping and golf purposes. The completed course contains six sand bunkers and two water hazards.

Development

Available published history after the 1962 construction is sparse. The core routing remains an 18-hole executive layout and continues to be promoted at the same 3,487-yard length. Modern operations have added online tee-time booking through Club Caddie as well as annual membership options.

The club's 2026 membership schedule includes individual, couple, junior and senior categories. No reliably sourced comprehensive architectural renovation or later redesign was found.

Recognition

Shamrock's documented recognition is regional. The course's official website states that it was voted Kankakee County's favorite golf course in The Daily Journal's 2022 online poll. Kankakee County's tourism organisation also promotes Shamrock as an 18-hole, 3,487-yard, par-60 course in Saint Anne.

Today

Shamrock remains a public 18-hole executive course on Illinois Highway 17 in Saint Anne. Golfers can reserve tee times online through the Club Caddie booking platform or contact the course by telephone. The property continues to use its mature woodland, rolling terrain and proximity to the Kankakee River as the principal physical features of the layout.

Current operations include daily-fee golf and annual memberships.
