Town-related sources describe the course as dating to 1896. For much of its history it was associated with St. Mark's School and operated as St.
Mark's Golf Club.
At the 2017 Annual Town Meeting, voters approved a land transaction through which Southborough acquired the golf course from St. Mark's School. The transaction was connected to development of the town's Public Safety Building but also allowed the golf property to remain undeveloped.
The town subsequently invested in tees, bunkers, paths, parking, practice areas, safety improvements and conservation work.
Mass Golf has noted that prominent architect Brian Silva grew up playing the course and developed an early interest in classic course architecture there.
Southborough Golf Club is publicly accessible, municipally owned and managed for the town under a golf-course operating agreement.
