About Stranraer Golf Club

Stranraer Golf Club is an 18-hole course at Creachmore in Dumfries and Galloway and is historically notable as the final golf-course design commissioned from five-time Open champion James Braid. The club itself dates to 1905, but its first ninety years included multiple stages of development, wartime loss of its earlier course and clubhouse, and the eventual move to a new site. Braid was brought out of retirement in 1950 to plan the Creachmore course.

He died on 27 November that year and therefore did not see the completed layout. The modern club should not be represented by the database's existing 17-hole, par-74 values; those are inconsistent with the present 18-hole course. Stranraer's Braid connection gives the course particular architectural significance because Creachmore represents the closing commission in a design career that included hundreds of courses and alterations throughout Britain.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. The course was designed by James Braid. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Membership.

Origins

Stranraer Golf Club was founded in 1905. Its early history involved finding and enlarging a course and developing a clubhouse before wartime requirements caused the loss of both the earlier course and home.

Did You Know?
Braid died in November 1950 before the Creachmore course he had planned for Stranraer was completed.

Design Philosophy

When the club moved toward a replacement course at Creachmore, James Braid was brought out of retirement to plan the new layout. The commission became the final course-design project of his career.

Development

Braid undertook the Creachmore commission in 1950 but died on 27 November that year before the course was completed. The club subsequently established itself at the new site, preserving an unusually direct connection to the final chapter of Braid's architectural career.

Recognition

Stranraer's significance is repeatedly noted in accounts of James Braid because Creachmore was his final design commission.

Today

Stranraer operates the Creachmore course as an 18-hole members' club with visitor access and online visitor booking.
