Tara Hills began operating in 1981 as a nine-hole municipal golf course serving Papillion and the surrounding Omaha metropolitan area. Its establishment preceded the development of Eagle Hills, the city's other municipal course.
The course combines relatively forgiving tee-shot conditions with a greater emphasis on accuracy as golfers approach the greens. Penncross bentgrass putting surfaces were constructed to USGA specifications, while Kentucky bluegrass was selected for tees, fairways and rough.
A significant expansion took place in 1993, when Tara Hills grew from nine to 18 holes. The expansion established the approximately 6,100-yard layout described by the municipal golf operator.
Tara Hills remains part of Papillion's municipal golf provision, alongside the separately located Eagle Hills Golf Course. The city maintains distinct contact information for the two facilities.
