Taupo Golf Club is a 36-hole golf facility on Centennial Drive in Taupo, comprising two separate 18-hole courses: Tauhara and Centennial. The club traces its history to 1928, when Vivian Fail led efforts to develop golf on an experimental block of pumice land. The original course began as seven holes, became nine holes and was formally launched at a Labour Day tournament in 1931; Tauhara was later extended to 18 holes in 1954.
The second course, Centennial, was designed by former New Zealand PGA Championship winner Ernie Southerden together with Taupo surveyor Mr Cheal and officially opened on 7 September 1973. The club describes Centennial as a 6,369-metre championship-length layout and Tauhara as a shorter 5,645-metre course. Centennial hosted the Freyberg Rosebowl five years after opening.
The course is a 36-hole parkland golf course. Designed by Ernie Southerden and Mr Cheal, the course originally opened in 1928. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Putting Green, Chipping Green, Practice Bunker, Golf Carts, Club Hire, Golf Lessons, Restaurant, and 3 more.
Vivian Fail moved to Taupo in 1928 and formed a steering committee to secure land for a golf course. Work began on the Taupo Experimental Block, where volunteers cleared scrub and constructed seven holes, later expanded to nine. The nine-hole course was formally launched at a Labour Day tournament in 1931.
Tauhara expanded to 18 holes in 1954. Rapid growth in Taupo during the following decades led the club to acquire 180 acres adjoining Tauhara for a second course. Ernie Southerden and surveyor Mr Cheal designed Centennial, which officially opened on 7 September 1973.
Severe wind in 1985 and Cyclone Bola in 1988 caused major tree damage, followed by substantial volunteer clean-up. Greg Turner was later engaged to advise on Centennial improvements, and fairway irrigation was added to both courses.
Centennial was selected to host the Freyberg Rosebowl only five years after its official opening.
Taupo Golf Club remains a two-course facility, with Tauhara providing the shorter routing and Centennial operating as the longer championship course.
