Templeton Golf Club is an 18-hole par-73 course at Templeton on the western side of Christchurch. The club's Blue course measures 6,106 metres. Golf on the site predates the club: horse-artillery officers stationed at Templeton Military Camp played informal holes on the Domain during the First World War.
Templeton Country Club was formally established in 1931, and Shirley professional Harry Blair was paid £5 to design an 18-hole layout. The completed course opened in 1932. The course occupies naturally undulating, free-draining ground associated with the old Waimakariri River bed and includes established trees and water features.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 73, 6,106m (6,678 yards). Designed by Harry Blair, the course originally opened in 1932. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Clubhouse, Bar, Changing Rooms, Golf Cart Hire, Club Hire, Trundler Hire.
Golf was being played on the Templeton Domain by 1915, when horse-artillery officers stationed at the nearby military camp improvised holes for off-duty recreation. Local golfers continued to use the land after the war, at times using sunken jam tins as cups. Around sixty people met on 13 August 1931 and unanimously formed Templeton Country Club.
Harry Blair, the professional at Shirley Golf Club, was then commissioned to design an 18-hole course.
Blair's routing used the naturally undulating gravels of the Canterbury Plains. The club describes the course as rewarding thoughtful golf rather than simple length, with the free-draining ground, mature trees and later-added water features forming much of its character.
Construction depended heavily on volunteer labour and workers from the Depression Relief Scheme. The completed 18-hole course opened in 1932. Club activities paused during the Second World War and resumed in 1946.
Subsequent decades brought new greens, clubhouse expansion, tree planting and other course improvements. The club records that a major professional tournament featuring leading New Zealand golfers was held there in 1969.
Templeton continues as an 18-hole club open to members and visitors. Recent work has focused on course improvements, practice facilities, junior golf, native planting and clubhouse investment as the club approaches its centenary in 2031.
