The course was designed in 1991 by Don Wright with input from European Tour veteran Eamonn Darcy and opened in 1992. Its site near Overton provided chalk-based downland terrain suited to year-round golf.
The routing uses two loops of nine returning to the clubhouse. The free-draining chalk subsoil, rough and bunkering helped give the young course an inland-links character in early descriptions.
Course improvement work has continued in the 2020s, including a multi-phase earthworks and landscaping programme intended to enhance areas of the existing routing while keeping golf operational.
Test Valley remains an 18-hole, par-72 members' club that accepts visitors and provides online tee-time booking, practice facilities and clubhouse services.
