H.

The links is characterised by naturally uneven dune terrain and a routing that has evolved through subsequent modifications rather than remaining exactly as first laid out.

Origins

The club grew from Laidlaw Purves' search for duneland capable of supporting a links in southern England. Purves and his brother surveyed the country around Sandwich and selected the site in 1887. His ambition was explicitly connected with creating a course capable of standing alongside the Scottish links tradition.

The 1894 Open at Royal St George's was the first staging of The Open outside Scotland.

Design Philosophy

Purves used the natural dune landscape to establish a links defined by irregular ground, natural contours and varied shot requirements. The course has subsequently been modified, including changes that reduced some of the blind and semi-blind shots found in earlier versions of the routing.

Development

Founded as St George's in 1887, the club received royal status in 1902. Its championship importance developed rapidly: it staged The Amateur Championship within its first years and in 1894 became the first English venue for The Open.

Recognition

Royal St George's is part of The Open rota and has hosted the championship repeatedly. Its champions include J.H. Taylor in the inaugural 1894 staging and Collin Morikawa in 2021.

Today

The club remains a private members' institution but permits visitor play on specified days under published handicap, booking and dress requirements.
