Thorpeness Hotel & Golf Club is an 18-hole coastal heathland course in Suffolk designed by five-time Open champion James Braid and opened in 1922. The club's current course guide describes a par-70 layout of 6,311 yards routed through heath, heather, gorse, pine and silver birch. The course is associated with the distinctive House in the Clouds landmark that overlooks the property.
Visitor play is available daily between 9:32am and 5:56pm, while early morning and post-6pm times are reserved for members and their guests. Visitors can book up to 14 days in advance and must prepay. The property combines the golf course with a hotel, restaurant and bar, and also provides golf instruction, a pro shop, putting and short-game practice areas, buggy and trolley hire and club rental.
The course is an 18-hole heathland golf course. It plays to par 70, 6,311 yards, course rating 70.1 and slope rating 130. Designed by James Braid, the course originally opened in 1922. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Green, Golf Lessons, Pro Shop, Club Rental, Golf Cart Rental, Trolley Hire, and 5 more.
Thorpeness was created as part of the distinctive Suffolk coastal village developed around the Meare. James Braid was commissioned to lay out the golf course on the heathland and the course opened in 1922.
Braid used the existing heathland character rather than imposing a heavily manufactured landscape. Heather, gorse, pine, silver birch and the naturally firm ground define the routing, while the course's sandy soils aid drainage.
The course has undergone later improvement work while retaining Braid's identity. The hotel and broader hospitality operation developed alongside the golf club, making Thorpeness both a member club and a visitor golf destination.
The course received the Overall Achievement Award at the 2012 STRI Golf Environment Awards, reflecting its long-running environmental management work.
