Tooth of the Dogpound Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 public course in Mountain View County, Alberta, between Cremona and Carstairs. The course opened in the fall of 2000 and was designed by Dan Odell, who used the existing terrain of the Dogpound Creek valley as the basis for the routing. From the Blue tees the official scorecard measures 6,352 yards, with White tees at 5,980 yards and Red tees at 5,220 yards.
The layout incorporates elevated tees and greens, mature vegetation, the creek itself and natural water features, supplemented by sand bunkers. Hole 8 is officially named "Devil's Head" and looks toward Devils Head Mountain on clear days. An unusual feature of the routing is that the ninth hole does not return to the clubhouse; because the 12th green finishes near the parking area, the club offers a 12-hole option for the same price as nine holes.
The course is an 18-hole golf course. It plays to par 72, 5,808m (6,352 yards), course rating 69.6 and slope rating 120. Designed by Dan Odell, the course originally opened in 2000. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Licensed Clubhouse, Snack Bar, Power Carts, Club Hire, Junior Membership, Family Membership.
The Tooth was developed directly around the landscape of the Dogpound Creek valley west of Carstairs. The club's own history credits Dan Odell as the course designer and says he used the valley's existing natural features as the guidelines for the layout rather than treating the creek and changes in elevation as obstacles to be removed. Federal records from May 2000 show the Tooth of the Dogpound Creek Golf Course applying for approval of pedestrian bridges over Dogpound Creek while the property was being developed.
The course opened later that year, in the fall of 2000.
Odell's routing makes the creek valley itself the principal design framework. The club specifically describes elevated tees and greens and natural water hazards as products of that approach. Dogpound Creek, mature trees and native vegetation remain integral hazards, while constructed sand bunkers provide an additional strategic element.
The course's official scorecard runs to 6,352 yards from the Blue tees, but the individual holes vary considerably in character and length, from short par threes to a 573-yard par five. The club singles out the eighth, "Devil's Head," by name; it occupies elevated ground with a view toward Devils Head Mountain when visibility allows.
The course has retained the basic 18-hole routing established at its 2000 opening. One operational peculiarity has become part of its identity: the ninth hole does not return players to the clubhouse. Instead of requiring golfers seeking a short round to stop far from the facilities, the club allows weekday players paying the nine-hole rate to continue through hole 12, whose green finishes near the parking lot.
This produces an unusual formal 12-hole option alongside the standard nine- and 18-hole formats.
Tooth of the Dogpound Creek remains a public, seasonal golf course in rural Mountain View County, roughly 20 kilometres west of Carstairs and 8 kilometres east of Cremona. The club publishes daily-fee rates for the public and also offers single, couple, family and junior memberships. Its current facilities include a licensed clubhouse and snack bar, driving range and practice putting green.
Public 18-hole play is available seven days a week, while the nine/12-hole option is offered Monday through Friday.
