The Wanderers Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 parkland course in Illovo, Johannesburg. Bob Grimsdell designed the original layout under the supervision of Felix Oliver. Construction began in 1937 and ten holes opened in 1939; the remaining eight were completed in 1942.
The course later lost three holes when the Wanderers Cricket Stadium was built in the 1950s, forcing a redesign. A further major renovation was undertaken in 1999 by Rob O'Friel, when greens and bunkers were rebuilt. The modern routing occupies a relatively compact urban property, with the cricket stadium now prominent beside the course.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,914m. Designed by Bob Grimsdell, the course originally opened in 1939. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Pro shop, Clubhouse, Full Membership, Social Membership, Junior Membership, Corporate Membership, Country Membership, Life Membership, and 2 more.
Victor Kent's decision to secure land at what became Kent Park helped protect the future of The Wanderers Club after the Second World War era and provided an opportunity to establish golf as a less physically demanding sport for older club members. Bob Grimsdell designed the course under the supervision of club member Felix Oliver. Construction started in 1937, ten holes were ready in 1939 and the full 18-hole course was completed in 1942.
The construction of the Wanderers Cricket Stadium in the 1950s took three of the golf course's original holes and required the layout to be altered. Bent-grass greens were introduced in 1982. In 1999 Rob O'Friel redesigned the course and the greens and bunkers were rebuilt.
Dale Hayes was appointed as a course consultant in 2007.
The modern Wanderers is an 18-hole par-71 parkland layout tightly fitted into a central Johannesburg property. It remains primarily a members' club but accommodates substantial visitor and corporate play.
