Origins

The Washburn family developed Wawona as a hotel resort and added golf to the Wawona Meadow in 1918. National Park Service research identifies Walter G. Fovargue as the architect and calls it California's first mountain golf course.

Did You Know?
The nine-green course received a separate set of back-nine tees in 1924 so golfers could play an 18-hole round over the same property.

Design Philosophy

The compact routing occupies the lower part of Wawona Meadow and uses the natural terrain rather than extensive earthmoving.

Development

A back-nine set of tees was added in 1924. The Wawona Hotel property and surrounding basin later became part of Yosemite National Park. National Park Service cultural-landscape documentation says the vintage course remains almost unchanged.

Recognition

The course is significant as part of the historic Wawona Hotel landscape and as an early mountain-resort golf course.

Today

The nine-hole course remains in operation within Yosemite National Park under the park's concessioner, with environmental management including reclaimed-water irrigation and no pesticide use.
