Origins

The land on which West Hill was created formed part of more than 2,000 acres acquired by the London Necropolis Company in the nineteenth century. By the early twentieth century it was clear that much of that land would not be needed for burials. Company executive and golfer J.

B. Walker indicated that land could be made available for golf, helping lead to the creation of West Hill.

Did You Know?
The land used for West Hill came from property originally acquired for the vast London Necropolis cemetery project.

Design Philosophy

Scottish professional Cuthbert Butchart designed and supervised construction. The course uses gentle heathland contours, with heather, pines, bunkering and the Brookwood brook providing its principal strategic and visual structure.

Development

West Hill opened for play in 1909. Some holes were lengthened and altered after the First World War, but the club states that the course has remained essentially the same since. Its archive includes correspondence from James Braid in 1911 discussing elements of the design.

Recognition

West Hill has long been grouped with the notable Surrey heathland courses and appears in multiple UK and Ireland course rankings.

Today

The club continues to maintain the heathland character of the course, including programmes intended to encourage heather growth.
