Origins

The public-course movement that followed World War I reached Winona in 1923. Arthur L. D.

Libera and other local golfers promoted a public alternative to the area's private-course model. When the Winona County Fair moved away from its West Fifth Street grounds, John A. Latsch acquired the former fairgrounds and deeded the property to the City of Winona for golf.

Sam Millar helped prepare the ground using borrowed farm tractors and locally sourced seed.

Did You Know?
Westfield began with only four holes and greens made from sand mixed with used crankcase oil.

Development

The first course opened in summer 1923 as a four-hole layout. Its tiny putting surfaces used a clay base topped with sand mixed with crankcase oil, and players used carpet-faced sweepers to smooth the surface after putting. The course expanded, grass greens were introduced, and a redesigned nine-hole layout emerged.

By the early 1930s the Winona Public Golf Course had adopted the Westfield Municipal Golf Club name.

Today

Westfield remains a nine-hole public course serving Winona. It supports leagues, tournaments, junior programmes and season-pass holders and maintains a substantial practice operation alongside its golf shop.
