About Whitefish Lake Golf Club - North Course

Whitefish Lake Golf Club's North Course is an 18-hole, par-72 public-access course in Whitefish, Montana. Its roots go back to the community-built golf project of the 1930s, with a grand-opening tournament held on May 24, 1936. The course later expanded to 18 holes in the early 1960s and underwent a major John Steidel remodel, with the Woods Nine completed in 1983 and the Lake Nine in 1985.

The current USGA database rates the Black tees at 6,909 yards, 73.7/140. The club's own hole-by-hole page presently totals 6,898 yards from those markers, creating a small source discrepancy that is flagged rather than silently reconciled. Whitefish Lake Golf Club now operates both North and South courses, with public tee times, a pro shop, restaurant, instruction, simulators and practice facilities.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,909 yards, course rating 73.7 and slope rating 140. Designed by Bill Trippett and G. A. MacMillan, the course originally opened in 1936. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Driving Range, Putting Green, Short Game Area, Golf Lessons, Golf Simulators, Restaurant.

Origins

Local residents led by D. P. Dedon acquired 104 acres west of Whitefish in the late 1920s to establish a golf course.

The property was later transferred through Flathead County to the City of Whitefish so the site could serve both golfers and as an emergency landing field. WPA funding helped complete the course and log clubhouse, and the grand-opening tournament was held on May 24, 1936. Bill Trippett supplied the original course design, with professional Fred Hall assisting construction.

Design Philosophy

The present North Course reflects several design generations rather than a single architect's plan. G. A.

MacMillan designed the additional holes that took the original course to 18 in the early 1960s. John Steidel then undertook a comprehensive remodel, completing the Woods Nine in 1983 and Lake Nine in 1985.

Development

Later projects included changes to holes 13 and 14 in 2008, a new fifth green and sixth tee complex in 2010, a rebuilt sixth green in 2013, additional forward tees, reshaped greens on holes 1, 7 and 8 in 2015 and an enlarged North Course putting green in 2017.

Today

The North Course forms half of Whitefish Lake Golf Club's 36-hole operation. It remains open to public daily-fee play alongside the South Course and is supported by a pro shop, restaurant, instruction, simulators and practice facilities.
