Wild Horse emerged from a community golf project in Gothenburg during the late 1990s. Dan Proctor and Dave Axland, both experienced course builders, were responsible for the design.
The design makes extensive use of the site's naturally sandy ground and broad-scale contours. Proctor and Axland used width, angles and ground movement rather than relying solely on forced hazards, an approach influenced by their extensive construction work on naturalistic golf architecture.
Wild Horse has appeared in national public-course rankings from Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Golfweek and has become a frequent championship venue for the Nebraska Golf Association.
The club combines visitor access with resident and non-resident membership programmes and remains one of Nebraska's best-known public-access courses.
