Golf Course Architect

, and prolific early golf course architect. After emigrating to the United States in 1887, he built the nation’s first golf course at Merchiston Ranch (six holes) and later designed or influenced more than 100 courses across the country, integrating naturalistic layouts that evolved in sophistication over time.

He held key industry roles at Wright & Ditson and Wanamaker’s and promoted Harry Vardon’s 1900 American tour. His architecture includes early work at Country Club of Greenfield (as Alex Findlay) and the original nine‑hole Belle Terre course (now part of Port Jefferson Country Club).
