in Agronomy. Since the early 1990s, he has designed over 45 new golf courses and renovated over 60, including Emerald Vale Golf Club in Manton, Michigan.
His career began in golf operations—from superintendent roles to managing a public course—and expanded into academia where he teaches golf course design and construction at Michigan State University and in Beijing. Matthews’s design philosophy emphasizes strategic routing, respect for the land’s natural terrain, aesthetic value, operational efficiency, and affordability.
He continues the family tradition, building on experiences gained from working alongside his grandfather and uncle.
