Muskegon Country Club is a private 18-hole, par-72 course in Muskegon, Michigan, playing 6,697 yards from its Black tees. The club was founded in 1908 on sand-dune terrain near Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. Thomas Bendelow created the original layout, and Donald Ross redesigned and renumbered the course in 1920.
The present routing uses rolling ground, fescue-lined fairways and elevated or contoured greens, with the club emphasizing approach play and green complexes rather than extreme length. The Black tees are currently listed at a 73.0 course rating and approximately 139 slope, although one current scorecard database publishes a slope of 140. Muskegon has been used repeatedly for Michigan and USGA competition, including the 2005 and 2013 Michigan Amateur Championships, the 2019 GAM Championship, GAM Senior Championships and regional qualifying events.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,697 yards, course rating 73 and slope rating 139. Designed by Tom Bendelow, the course originally opened in 1908. It is open to members and their guests. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Short Game Practice Area, Golf Lessons, Junior Golf Programs, Golf Simulators, Golf Shop, Locker Rooms, and 3 more.
The landscape came first at Muskegon. The club was founded in 1908 on roughly 130 acres of natural dune ground near Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake, and the same property remains its home. Thomas Bendelow was brought in to establish the original course, using the rolling terrain rather than flattening it into a conventional layout.
His routing exceeded 6,000 yards and made extensive use of the site's natural elevation changes. In 1920 the club turned to Donald Ross, who evaluated Bendelow's course and saw considerably more potential in the property. Rather than discard everything that already existed, Ross redesigned and renumbered the course, refining its playing lines and bringing his own ideas about approaches, greens and strategic positioning to the layout.
The defining architectural feature is the natural dune terrain. The two nines spread from the clubhouse across rolling ground, with ridges and elevation changes helping separate holes that can appear quite close together on an aerial plan. Fairways are now framed in places by tall fescue, while many greens remain open in front, allowing running approaches as well as aerial shots.
Those openings are often narrowed by bunkers or angled green surfaces, so the relatively modest overall yardage does not remove the strategic demands. Modern descriptions of the course repeatedly emphasize the importance of approach placement and the difficulty of its greens. Ross's 1920 work retained the usefulness of the site's natural contours rather than relying on excessive artificial shaping.
The course did not remain frozen after Ross. The club itself acknowledges several subsequent changes and renumbering schemes, while Golf Digest records later work by three generations of Michigan's Matthews family of architects. Jerry Matthews and W.
Bruce Matthews III are among those credited with alterations; Matthews III specifically identifies work on the 15th hole and 17th green. Those interventions mean the present course is not a completely untouched Ross layout. In 2011, golf writer and Donald Ross Society authority Brad Klein walked the property and advised the club on ways to move it closer to its historic character.
The resulting direction has focused on retaining and recovering the strongest elements of the Bendelow-Ross foundation rather than replacing the course with a wholly modern design.
Muskegon's tournament history has made it an important venue in Michigan golf. The Golf Association of Michigan selected it for the Michigan Amateur in both 2005 and 2013 and later staged the 2019 GAM Championship there. It hosted the GAM Senior Championship in 2017 and again in 2024, as well as two GAM Women's Championships and the 2022 GAM Senior Match Play.

Golf Digest currently includes Muskegon among its ranked Michigan courses, placing it No. 29 in the state.
Muskegon Country Club remains a private golf club and is now part of RedWater's network of West Michigan clubs. Full golf memberships provide access to several RedWater private courses, while guests play through members rather than through public daily-fee booking. The golf facilities include a driving range, short-game area, putting green, PGA instruction and junior programmes.
Five TrackMan simulator bays in the clubhouse provide year-round indoor golf and are open to the public separately from the private outdoor course. The property also includes a pool, restaurant and event facilities.
