Golf Course Architect
George E. Santana began his career as a greenskeeper and later superintendent at San Jose Country Club, rising from mowing with horses in his youth to managing course construction and design across the Santa Clara Valley.
In the late 1940s through the 1950s he established a driving range business and engaged in construction and design of local courses—including Hollister, Bolado Park, Cambrian Park, Santa Teresa Golf Club (opened 1962/1963), and Almaden Country Club. In the 1960s he built and managed his own course, El Rancho Verde.
He remained active in turfgrass and course superintendent associations, ultimately honored in 1974 as a life member of the regional turfgrass council. He passed away in April 1992 at age 87.
