Golf Course Architect
George Lowe (1856–1934) was born in a rural parish of Carmyllie in Angus, Scotland, and moved at age eight to Carnoustie, where he fell in love with golf through caddying. He trained as a club‑maker and assistant professional at renowned venues including Carnoustie, Leven, St Andrews, Hoylake, and later served for nearly 17 years at Lytham & St Anne’s.
During this time he crafted thousands of clubs and earned a reputation as a leading pro‑greenkeeper‑designer in the late 19th to early 20th century. Lowe designed numerous courses—more than 41 are documented—primarily in northwest England, reaching into Yorkshire, Cumbria, Derbyshire (including Bakewell), and Lancashire.
He is credited with original layouts at Royal Birkdale (1897) and Royal Lytham & St Annes, and brought golf inland successfully, as exemplified by his work on moorland courses like Bakewell and Saddleworth.
