About Windermere Golf Club

Windermere Golf Club is an 18-hole course at Cleabarrow in the Lake District, founded in 1891 after local golfers asked George Lowe, the professional at Lytham St Annes, to assess the site. Lowe recommended an initial nine-hole course, and Windermere expanded to 18 holes in 1892. The current White course is 5,122 yards and par 67; England Golf's current listing gives the White tee a 66.1 course rating and 121 slope.

The club's terrain is characterised by natural undulation, heather, bracken and rocky outcrops, while all 18 greens were rebuilt to USGA construction standards in a project completed in 2005. The club identifies the eighth, Fairfield, as its signature hole. Despite its relatively modest overall yardage, the routing includes six par threes from the White tees and only one par five.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 67, 5,122 yards, course rating 66.1 and slope rating 121. Designed by George Lowe, the course originally opened in 1891. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Practice Area, Golf Shop, Driving Range, Bar, Cafe, Catering, Changing Rooms, Club Hire, and 5 more.

Origins

A group of local golf enthusiasts asked George Lowe, professional at Lytham St Annes, to inspect Cleabarrow Fells in 1891. Lowe reported that the land could support an excellent nine-hole course. Windermere Golf Club was formally inaugurated on 14 March 1891, leased land from the Church and bought an acre for a clubhouse.

The original membership comprised 34 men. In 1892 the course expanded to 18 holes and women were admitted, with membership reaching 94 men and 36 women.

Did You Know?
The club began with only 34 gentlemen members and expanded from nine to eighteen holes the following year.

Development

The club bought the full 200 acres it had originally leased in 1912. During the Second World War staffing shortages reduced the course to nine holes, with 18-hole play restored in 1946. A major course renovation in 1967 created new tees at several holes and new greens at the 12th and 16th.

Drainage problems later led to a much larger greens project: beginning in 2003, the club rebuilt all 18 greens and surrounding areas to USGA construction standards, completing the work by the end of 2005.

Recognition

The club reports recognition from National Club Golfer as the best course in South Cumbria. Golf World included Windermere among its most fun and enjoyable courses in Great Britain and Ireland in 2024 and ranked it ninth in England.

Today

Windermere remains an 18-hole members' club that actively welcomes visitors. The course retains its short, irregular routing across rolling Lake District ground while operating modern USGA-specification greens and a range of practice, retail and clubhouse facilities.
