Golf Course Architect
George Clifford Thomas Jr. (1873–1932) was an American golf course architect, botanist, and author, whose first independent project was the nine‑hole Marion Golf Club in Massachusetts in 1904.
He was a founding member of the ‘Philadelphia School’ of architecture and later moved to California, where he collaborated with William P. “Billy” Bell on iconic courses like Riviera, Bel‑Air, and the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club; he also authored the influential book Golf Course Architecture in America.
He was equally renowned for his work in rose hybridization, cultivating hundreds of varieties.
