Golf Course Architect
Gordon Bernard Oliver, a British-born golf course architect, was commissioned in December 1933 to lay out the original links at what became Long Island Country Club (Australia) on the former Frankston racecourse. His design—completed by early 1937 and officially opened in 1938—formed the enduring backbone of the club’s layout and established a subtle yet strategic Sandbelt character that has largely endured with minimal alteration.
A contemporary evaluation notes that Oliver arrived with little design portfolio, yet delivered a course resonant with Sandbelt hallmarks—undulating fairways, well-framed bunkering into hillside contours, and strategic green complexes. Beyond Long Island, no additional documented golf architecture contributions by Oliver have been identified.
