About golf in Victoria

371 courses

Victoria's golf landscape is as diverse as it is captivating, offering a rich tapestry of course styles set against stunning natural backdrops. The region boasts a mix of parkland and coastal courses, with the famed Sandbelt area near Melbourne being a highlight. This corridor is home to world-renowned courses like Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath, known for their strategic design and immaculate conditioning. The terrain varies from the rugged coastal links of Cape Schanck to the lush parkland settings found in the Yarra Valley. The diversity of the courses, combined with the natural beauty of Victoria's landscapes, makes golfing here a distinctive experience compared to other regions.

Access to Victoria's courses is a blend of public and private options, catering to a wide range of golfers. While the prestigious Sandbelt courses are primarily members-only, many clubs offer limited public access, allowing visitors to experience these iconic venues. The best time to visit is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild and the courses are in peak condition. Victoria's golf scene suits both seasoned players seeking challenging layouts and casual golfers looking for scenic rounds. Coastal courses offer a different character compared to the more sheltered inland tracks, providing a varied golfing experience across the region.

Notable Courses in Victoria

Royal Melbourne Golf Club - West Course
The West Course was the sole venue for several early Australian Opens, including Jim Ferrier's win in 1939. Since the Composite Course was created for the 1959 Canada Cup, however, Royal Melbourne's biggest modern events -- the 1998, 2011 and 2019 Presidents Cups, multiple World Cups of Golf, and most Australian Opens played since the 1970s -- have been staged over that blended 12-West/6-East routing rather than the West Course alone. Because the Composite draws holes from both courses, tournament results from that era should not be credited to the West Course exclusively. · Royal Melbourne's West Course has long been rated the No. 1 golf course in Australia, and it is regularly placed among the top ten courses in the world by major ranking panels including Golf Digest and Top 100 Golf Courses.
St Andrews Beach Golf Club
2026 rankings include #6 Australia / #89 world from Top 100 Golf Courses and #4 public access / #14 Australia from Australian Golf Digest, as reported by the club
Royal Melbourne Golf Club - East Course
In 1935 the East Course hosted a match between visiting British and Australian women's teams and, the same week, the Australian Women's Amateur Championship. Royal Melbourne's headline modern events -- including multiple Presidents Cups, World Cups of Golf, and Australian Opens -- have instead been played on the Composite Course, a routing that blends 12 West Course holes with 6 from the East (including the East's 17th and 18th) rather than either course individually. · Cited by Royal Melbourne and by independent ranking panels such as Top 100 Golf Courses as a world top-100 course and among the leading courses in Australia, generally regarded a tier below the West Course.
