Golf Course Architect
” Taylor (1871–1963) was a five‑time Open Champion and one of golf’s early playing legends whose influence extended into golf course design. He began as a caddie and groundsman at Royal North Devon GC before turning professional in 1890, eventually serving at clubs including Royal Wimbledon and Royal Mid‑Surrey.
Over decades, he helped elevate the status of professional golfers by co‑founding the British PGA and captaining the 1933 Ryder Cup team without ever playing in a match. He was also a noted architect, credited with introducing creative shaping techniques—such as early “dogleg” holes and ‘alpinization’ mound construction—and designing or remodeling courses across England and Wales, including Sidmouth (1890), Frilford Heath (1908), Hindhead (1904), and Royal Birkdale among others.
