Brora Golf Club

Origins

Golf at Brora emerged from the late-19th-century growth of the game along Scotland's northern railway and coastal communities. The club was formally constituted on 2 November 1891 and began with nine holes on natural linksland beside the North Sea. The site already possessed the firm, sandy ground, coastal grasses and undulations suited to golf, allowing the early course to be formed with comparatively limited alteration.

John Sutherland, the influential secretary of Royal Dornoch, is credited by several historical accounts with extending Brora from nine to 18 holes. Sources differ on the precise timing: some place the extension in 1897, while others describe it more generally as occurring around ten years after the club's formation. J.

H. Taylor subsequently advised on further changes before the club sought a more comprehensive redesign.

Design Philosophy

The defining architectural intervention came when Brora's committee invited James Braid to review the course. Golf Highland records that Braid travelled to Brora by train in February 1924, walked the ground and departed later that day. For a fee reported as approximately £25, he submitted the plan that established the present course.

Braid retained a traditional links structure, with nine holes travelling outward and nine returning toward the clubhouse. The routing makes use of the coastal contours rather than relying on extensive earthmoving. Its short holes face different compass directions, forcing adjustments for changes in wind, while longer holes use burns, natural hollows, bunkers and angled greens to influence strategy.

The 18th finishes beneath the clubhouse, following a convention found at many early Scottish links.

Development

The original nine-hole course was enlarged under the influence of John Sutherland and later adjusted with input from J. H. Taylor.

Braid's 1920s plan was the most substantial redesign, and later accounts consistently state that the routing has changed little since it was implemented. The course has continued to operate on land subject to traditional crofting and grazing arrangements. Sheep and cattle roaming between holes became one of Brora's most recognisable characteristics, while small electric fences protected the greens.

In 2026, the club's relationship with local grazing-right holders became the subject of proceedings concerning the future of those rights. That issue remains separate from the historical design attribution and should not be treated as a completed ownership or land-use change.

Recognition

Brora is regularly included in regional and national assessments of traditional Scottish links golf. Architectural commentary values the course for the survival of Braid's restrained routing and its use of naturally formed coastal ground. Golf Monthly included Brora among its seven best-value golf memberships for 2026, citing its James Braid design and traditional links character.

Golf publications commonly position it as part of the group of notable northern Highland courses centred on Royal Dornoch, Golspie and the east Sutherland coast.

Today

Brora remains an 18-hole members' club that welcomes visiting golfers and publishes seasonal visitor rates. The course is rated from White, Yellow and Red tees, with separate WHS ratings available for men and women. Its clubhouse is open to non-members under a public licence and includes bar and catering service.

The club also offers professional instruction, equipment fitting, hire equipment and caddie arrangements. The links continues to occupy low coastal ground beside the North Sea, and Braid's core routing remains substantially intact.
