Golf Course Architect
Jim Engh is an American golf course architect known for tackling bold, challenging terrain and turning it into richly memorable golf experiences. A native of North Dakota, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (with a focus on turfgrass science) from Colorado State University in 1985, followed by project management certification from the University of Wisconsin.
Early in his career he trained under respected architects such as Dick Nugent, Ken Dye, and Joe Finger, and gained construction insight working for Landscapes Unlimited and McCumber Golf Construction. In 1987 he joined Cotton Pennick as Director of Golf Course Design and Construction, and when Cotton Pennick was acquired by IMG, he became Director of Golf Course Design for IMG Developments at its European headquarters in London.
In 1991, he founded his own firm, James J. Engh Golf Design (aka Engh Golf Design).
He gained national prominence with daring, visually striking golf courses such as The Sanctuary (1997) in Colorado, which launched him onto the scene, and others like Fossil Trace, Redlands Mesa, Tullymore, and The Club at Black Rock—all earning high rankings and awards. His design philosophy embraces the “rock and roll aesthetic,” using dramatic landforms (“hot spots”), deceptive routing, and inventive shaping.
Golf Digest named him Architect of the Year in 2003, and his work has left a lasting mark across Colorado, Idaho, Michigan, North Dakota, and internationally.
