Golf Course Architect
Perry Duke Maxwell (1879–1952) was born in Princeton, Kentucky, and moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma, in 1897, where he built his career after leaving banking for golf course design. A founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, he became known as the "father of Oklahoma golf" and was noted for large, undulating "rolling" greens shaped to fit natural topography.
He designed or substantially renovated roughly 70 courses and remodeled about 50 others, including Dornick Hills, Southern Hills Country Club, Prairie Dunes Country Club, and a redesign of 11 greens at Augusta National. He also partnered with Alister MacKenzie on projects such as Crystal Downs Country Club.
