Veenker Memorial Golf Course

Origins

Iowa State did not set out to build a showpiece. In 1937, with jobless young men across Iowa needing work, the university found a way to put them to it: carve a golf course into farmland just north of campus using Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps labor. Athletic director George Veenker and university president Raymond Hughes pushed the project through, and Perry Maxwell, the Oklahoma-based architect who would later reshape greens at Augusta National, was brought in to lay out the holes.

Crews spent months cutting trees, moving hills, and hand-shaping fairways and greens before the course opened for play on May 12, 1938. It carried no name for its first two decades until 1959, when it was rededicated to Veenker, who had championed it into existence but did not live to see it finished.

Design Philosophy

Maxwell's signature was letting the land dictate the greens — large, rolling putting surfaces shaped around whatever contour was already there rather than imposed on it. At Veenker, that approach played out along Squaw Creek, which cuts through the property and still crosses five holes today, forcing shot-shaping and uneven lies on the holes that survive closest to their 1938 form.

Development

Veenker is not the course Maxwell drew. Campus growth forced two major reroutes: one in the early 1970s, when a street extension took out several original holes, and a second in 1982 that altered or eliminated four more. Combined, the changes erased roughly half of Maxwell's routing, and the holes added to replace them are generally considered less distinctive than what they replaced.

A 2008 re-grassing converted the fairways and greens to bentgrass. What remains of the original design is concentrated on the creek-side holes, which is also where most reviewers say the course still shows its age and quality.

Recognition

The course hosted the 1949 NCAA Golf Championship, where a young Arnold Palmer competed as a medalist, and it has run the Iowa Masters every year since it opened in 1938. Golfweek named it one of America's Best State Public Access Courses in 2003. It remains the home course for Iowa State's men's and women's golf teams.

Today

Veenker still operates as a university-run public course, with discounted rates for Iowa State students, faculty, and alumni alongside general public play, a driving range, pro shop, and clubhouse rentals for outings.
