Golf Course Architect
Robert Bruce Harris (1896–1976) was an Illinois native who began as a landscape architect and, after World War I, earned a degree in landscape architecture at the University of Illinois. He laid out his first golf course in Michigan in 1926 and shifted to renovating abandoned Depression-era courses, emphasizing economical, low‑maintenance designs.
After World War II, he focused on golf course architecture, designing or remodeling over 150 courses across the Midwest and South. He was a founding member and the first president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA), and co‑authored a key chapter on course design in a leading turf‑management text.
