Origins

Golf associated with the Finkbine name predates the present layout. The University of Iowa later moved the course to its current site west of campus, where Robert Bruce Harris designed an 18-hole course that opened in July 1955. The property became an important recreational facility for Iowa City as well as the home venue of Hawkeye golf.

Did You Know?
The land for the university's earlier golf course was donated by the Finkbine family, while the present course dates from the university's early-1950s relocation of the facility.

Design Philosophy

Harris used the site's rolling Iowa terrain to create an 18-hole, par-72 course with substantial elevation movement, sloping greens and extensive bunkering. University descriptions note sand bunkers on 17 of the 18 holes.

Development

The most consequential change since the 1950s relocation began after the 2025 season. A privately funded project led by architect Scott Hoffman and managed through Troon's relationship with Iowa Athletics is rebuilding and modernizing the course during 2026. The work includes layout changes, playability improvements and sustainable turf and irrigation measures, with reopening targeted for 2027.

Recognition

Finkbine has a substantial tournament history. The Amana VIP Pro-Am brought PGA professionals and national celebrities to Iowa City for more than two decades. The course subsequently hosted the 1991 Ben Hogan Tour Hawkeye Open and men's Big Ten Championships in 1992 and 2002.

Today

The University of Iowa Athletic Department owns Finkbine and Troon manages the facility. The course and driving range are closed during the 2026 construction project.
