Golf Course Architect
Tom Simpson (1877–1964) was an English barrister-turned-golf course architect of the early 20th-century Golden Age. Educated at Cambridge and originally practising law, he developed an interest in golf design while observing course alterations at Woking Golf Club.
He joined Herbert Fowler’s firm in 1910, later co-founding Fowler, Abercromby, Simpson & Croome, and eventually established his own practice, Simpson & Co. Simpson became renowned for his strategic design philosophy, favouring minimal, lace‑edged bunkers, natural contours, routed triangulations, and deceptive green complexes that reward mental agility.
His continental European legacy includes significant work at Royal Lytham & St Annes (England), Royal Antwerp (Belgium), and other prestigious venues such as Morfontaine and Chantilly in France.
