About Arcola Country Club

Arcola Country Club is a private 18-hole, par-72 club in Paramus, New Jersey, founded in 1909. Contemporary club records reproduced by golf-history sources show that on 21 September 1909 Herbert H. Barker, then the professional at Garden City Golf Club, was appointed to lay out an 18-hole course.

The site had previously been farmland, with crops including corn, melons and potatoes, and the early club board specifically protected larger existing trees during development. The course later required substantial alteration as major road projects reshaped the surrounding area; historical accounts credit Willard G. Wilkinson with changes associated with Route 4 and Robert Trent Jones Sr.

The course is an 18-hole golf course. Designed by Herbert H. Barker, the course originally opened in 1909. It is open to members and their guests. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Practice Area, Clubhouse.

Origins

Arcola was founded in 1909 on agricultural land in Paramus. Early club records note that the Zabriskie family had grown crops on the property and that existing landowners were permitted to remove the year's harvest. On 21 September 1909 Herbert H.

Barker, golf professional at Garden City Golf Club, was appointed to lay out an 18-hole course at a daily rate of $25.

Did You Know?
The club's 1909 minutes allowed the previous landowners to harvest that year's crops while the new golf property was being established.

Design Philosophy

The original course was Barker's work, laid over the existing farmland while the board sought to preserve mature trees. The present course cannot be attributed solely to that original routing because transportation projects later forced substantial alterations.

Development

Historical accounts credit Willard G. Wilkinson with a redesign around 1930 in response to Route 4 and Robert Trent Jones Sr. with another major intervention around 1950 as the Garden State Parkway was constructed.

Subsequent work has continued to modify the course, which is one reason current scorecard sources from different periods should not be combined.

Recognition

Arcola has a long record in metropolitan and New Jersey amateur golf. It co-hosted the 2022 U.S. Amateur with nearby Ridgewood Country Club and has hosted multiple New Jersey State Golf Association and Metropolitan Golf Association championships.

Today

Arcola operates as a private, golf-centred country club in Paramus with an 18-hole par-72 course, practice facilities, dining and social amenities.
