Ardfin is an 18-hole course on the southern coast of the Isle of Jura. Australian architect Bob Harrison began work after being commissioned by owner Greg Coffey in 2011 and spent six years developing the design; the final routing was the fourteenth concept considered for the property. The course follows exposed coastal ground and cliffs overlooking the surrounding Hebridean waters.
Construction required substantial engineering because much of the site consisted of peat and rock. Peat was removed to depths of up to three metres in places, while extensive drainage and repeated sand topdressing were used to create firm playing surfaces. Harrison deliberately limited conventional earthmoving where possible and sought a routing that followed the existing landscape.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. Designed by Bob Harrison, the course originally opened in 2019. It is open to resort guests. On-site facilities include Accommodation, Restaurant.
Ardfin owner Greg Coffey contacted Bob Harrison in 2011 with the intention of creating a golf course along the cliffs of the Ardfin Estate. Harrison, who had spent 21 years with Greg Norman Design Company in Australasia before establishing his own practice, travelled to Scotland within 48 hours of the initial call. He ultimately made 27 visits over six years while designing and building the course.
Harrison's stated objective was to make the course appear natural within the Jura landscape. The routing went through fourteen concepts before the final arrangement was chosen. Difficult peat and rock conditions required extensive drainage and construction work, including peat excavation reaching three metres deep around the 14th.
Sand topdressing of fairways, greens and tees was subsequently used to promote firm surfaces.
Golf Digest records a soft opening in late summer 2019. Travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic subsequently interrupted the estate's early operating period.
The course quickly entered international rankings; Golf Digest currently lists Ardfin among its ranked courses in the United Kingdom and Ireland and in Scotland.
Ardfin operates as part of a large private estate on Jura with accommodation at Jura House and the Quads. Access is structured around stays and estate golf rather than ordinary public green-fee play.
