Atkins Golf Club at the University of Illinois is an 18-hole public course in Urbana and the home course of the Fighting Illini men's and women's golf teams. The property began as Stone Creek Golf Club, whose vision came to fruition in 1999 through Clint Atkins and architects Dick and Tim Nugent. In 2020 the Atkins family donated more than 300 acres, including the golf club and associated buildings and equipment, to the University of Illinois and University of Illinois Foundation as part of a gift valued at $15 million.
Illinois Athletics subsequently worked with architect Drew Rogers on a major renovation. Greens were rebuilt, bunkers were relocated and reconstructed using the Better Billy Bunker system, and additional length was created for collegiate championship setups. The renovated course reopened in 2022.
The course is an 18-hole golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,888m (7,533 yards). Designed by Dick Nugent and Tim Nugent, the course originally opened in 1999. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Golf Lessons, Pro Shop, Restaurant, Bar, Banquet Facilities, Event Facilities, Locker Room.
The course began as Stone Creek Golf Club. Its development came to fruition in 1999 through Clint Atkins and architects Dick and Tim Nugent, creating an 18-hole public course less than three miles from the University of Illinois campus.
The Nugents' original course established the routing that served Urbana golfers and the Illinois golf programs for roughly two decades. After the university acquired the property, Drew Rogers was engaged to adapt it for modern collegiate championship golf while retaining a playable public course. The project rebuilt every green, relocated many bunkers, reconstructed bunkers using the Better Billy Bunker system and added enough length for setups beyond 7,500 yards.
Ownership changed in 2020 when the Atkins family donated more than 300 acres to the University of Illinois and University of Illinois Foundation. The gift included Stone Creek Golf Club, its buildings and equipment and was valued at $15 million. Illinois Athletics funded and undertook an extensive renovation, after which the property reopened in 2022 under the Atkins Golf Club at the University of Illinois name.
The renovated course was selected to host the 2025 NCAA Men's Golf Urbana Regional. For that event it played as a par 71 at 7,533 yards. The venue had already hosted the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate in 2023 and 2024.
Atkins Golf Club is a public golf course and the home venue of the Fighting Illini men's and women's golf teams. Troon operates daily golf operations, while the property also includes Oskee's Sports Pub, event facilities, a driving range and golf instruction.
