The Country Club of Decatur was founded in 1899, but the present-day golf property is the product of a major relocation undertaken in the late 1920s. Club records show that a search for a new site was underway by 1926. During February and March 1928 the club assembled approximately 159.5 acres through purchases and leases from several neighbouring landowners.
The club's current golf material credits prolific architect Thomas Bendelow with the design. Its historical timeline separately records a contract with Leonard Macomber, Inc. for plans and specifications for the new golf course.
The resulting layout uses rolling terrain, creeks, ponds and tree-lined corridors, with accuracy and club selection playing a larger role than sheer distance.
The Board approved the new-course contract on March 30, 1928. By October 30 the Board was able to inspect the new course on foot, approving it subject to satisfactory development of several greens. Construction of the new clubhouse began on October 1, 1928, establishing the present Country Club Road property as the club's long-term home.
The course has hosted a range of professional and amateur events, including Central Illinois PGA championships, Illinois PGA section competition, senior state amateur qualifying and the Decatur City Amateur.
The Country Club of Decatur remains a private member-owned club. Its current Blue tees measure 6,626 yards at par 72, and the club continues to combine golf with dining, social and family amenities.
